Grading Dates 2008

New grading policy;

Dear parents/students,

Recently we introduced a new tab grading system for the children which has proved very successful. As a result of this we have decided to do away with the minimum lesson count so now the focus will be on the number of tabs acquired as the only criteria for junior gradings.

As before students will only be allowed to grade if they have the appropriate number of tabs (1 black and 3 coloured). The tab system allows junior students to progress at their own speed and puts them in control to choose which date they want to grade making the grading experience a little less stressful.

As for adult Ju-jitsu & Karate gradings you will be eligable to grade every four months with the exception of brown belt gradings which will have a period of six months between each tab, effective from third kyu making a total of 18 months from gaining third kyu to taking black belt.

Gradings will be held every 2 months - so when you are eligable you can grade at the next available date.

The decision to extend the period for adult gradings was made in the light of the fact that at Kenshinkan we do not primarily focus on syllabus work for adults but integrate mixed martial arts training for diversity and all round preparedness for self defence.

This flexible option gives you the control of your own development and progression towards the coveted black belt. We appreciate that not all of us learn the same and this will allow you to progress and build confidence at your own rate.

To set personal goals is a good thing and helps to motivate us all to train and progress to the best of our ability. The use of the syllabus is a good way to monitor this progression and helps us to set these personal goals, but you have to use the syllabus as the learning tool that it is and read it.

It is full of specific and general information relating to

both theory and practical so dig it out and have a look. If you haven’t got one or need a replacement you can purchase one for £7.50, just ask Mike or Clare, separate syllabus are provided for Karate and Jujitsu.

Another useful training aid is the Kenshinkan Kata DVD and the JuJitsu Atemi Waza DVD which contains many of the Kata & Atemi Waza that you need to learn, also available to buy from us for £5.

Also check out the website at regular intervals at www.Kenshinkan.org, it contains information on our Karate club and also Ju-Jitsu club in Otley.
